GOLDEN ERA ICONS
Bringing back the Knowledge, one group at a time.
by Nelson Dedos Garcia

Paying tribute to the innovative artists of the Golden era is an idea I’ve been slowly cultivating for over a decade.
Growing up in the '90s, as a graffiti artist / bboy, these artists inspired me, influenced me...saved me. I imagined an art collector series of all the MCs from the '80s through the mid-'90s who seemed to possess an incredible amount of originality. Throughout the inner city struggles, there was still a strong sense of innovation, inspiration, and resourcefulness; which we also possessed on the west coast of Canada. We looked to these artists who were rewriting the narrative and giving voice to many of us who felt excluded, under-represented.
So this is my way of reciprocating and giving that positive energy back to the community. It is my hope that the youth today will take the initiative to dig and learn about what it meant to be dope and enlightened.

What I have accomplished thus far is slim but it's just the tip of the iceberg.
Don't judge me by the colour of my skin, but by the content of my characters.

Description:

This particular collection is 1 out of 4 and eventually 5 under the same umbrella "Golden Era Icons" as they are all the same content just different styles.
I am focusing more on the profile pic series as they are a much quicker turnaround and I can get my concept out of the world and seen more rapidly.
These cards are a start of a long journey, to a world I have in mind that will take all those who experienced Hip Hop culture throughout their upbringing. In hopes that it will tug at their nostalgic strings and force them to reflect back to a time when innocence and love for being innovative could rise from the ashes of struggle and hardship in the inner cities of America. A time when consciousness was at a higher elevated state within the community and it was being reflected in the music and video storytelling.

So these designs are what all the mints would look like with slight variations, probably depending on the era I'm choosing to focus on through style background colours adjustments. I have hundreds in mind to a full complete series, and I'm not just focusing on the MCs, I am covering all elements of the culture here. As you can imagine that would entail many more to come, which is why I am keen on making this a life's work in the making.

It took the experience of my own to gather this knowledge and now that I'm nearing my mid-life term in age I'd love to dedicate my next term to this project, not only for visual stimulation but to educate new generations.

My goal is to bring back the knowledge, one architect at a time.
